Roundup: Spier & Mackay Fall 2019 Sportcoats

Spier & Mackay sportcoats for fall have started to drop for presale, and as I like to do each season (read my Spring Roundup), I am taking this post to highlight some of my favorites. I am planning on picking up quite a few this season as I transition from my old 40R Slim size to my new preference of 40R Contemporary. Both sizes work but I am enjoying more relaxed fits across the board for my wardrobe. I would say that collecting the Spier & Mackay Neapolitan sportcoats each season has become a bit of a hobby, I really enjoy so many of the fabric choices each season. I will keep this post updated as we see more drops in the coming weeks.

The Spier & Mackay team has been doing a bang up job season over season and it seems they are getting some more exposure this year, with features on some prominent blogs including Parisian Gentleman. Clearly I was early on the curve with Spier & Mackay (hehe) but it is great to see others finally catching on. Let me take you through my Spier & Mackay sportcoat picks for the season.

The Goods

First up is one an Abraham Moon Oatmeal Donegal. I have been after this one for quite some time and a few years ago Spier & Mackay dropped a fawn donegal that held me over for a bit. I recently sold the fawn though and will be picking this one up to fill the gap. Keep in mind that this is a deadstock cloth so if you are after it, act quick. It has been said that Spier & Mackay only had enough cloth for 50 jackets.

Abraham Moon Blue and Brown Check. I think this is the best of this initial drop of sportcoats. The subtle blue over check adds just the right amount of visual interest. I can easily see this being  something that serves as a timeless versatile jacket year over year.

Harris Tweeds! need I say more?… Ok I will.

This season has brought a few fabric mills that, to my knowledge, Spier & Mackay has yet to use. The Harris Tweed in this fantastic green check caught my eye right away. Most certainly not a day to day jacket but the colors so perfectly capture the season that it is going to be a tough one to resist. Might just be the ideal jacket to wear on casual Friday with a pair of high rise denim.

Fox Brothers is the second of the new mills I noticed and this one is just lovely, although one of the most expensive we have seen from Spier & Mackay so far. In contrast to the Harris Tweed, this one is about as versatile as they get. I can already imagine some great pairings with olive, dark brown, cream, and light grey trousers.

Next up is the Drago Emerald Herringbone. I bought the green tweed tweed that Spier & Mackay brought out last year, which makes this one tough to justify. That really doesn’t make it any less awesome. This will be an easy choice for anyone who missed last years green jacket.

I’ve loved this Amicale Grey & Brown Check since Spier & Mackay previewed it on their Instagram stories. Now we are finding out it is 90% wool and 10% cashmere. I can only assume it is as comfortable as it looks. I can see this one paired with oatmeal flannel or brown moleskin trousers.

Spier & Mackay Trousers

I couldn’t help but throw these in the post. They are VBC Covert wool trousers, made in the Spier & Mackay high rise, pleated model. I ended up ordering both the navy and stone since they could be my ideal winter weight work trouser. 440gsm in weight, and a twill look but in wool rather than cotton so they should be a bit more wrinkle resistant.
