I was given the opportunity to test out and review a custom suede leather jacket from Atacama (provided free of charge in exchange for my honest opinion). Below I will walk you through my overall impressions, along with details around the ordering process and sizing.
First a bit of background on Atacama. The company launched in 2017, offering fully customizable, luxury leather jackets made in Italy. With a wide variety of leathers, colors, linings, buttons, and styles, you are able to design a jacket perfectly suited to your own unique style. Each jacket silhouette is inspired and dedicated to Hollywood stars such as: Steve McQueen, Cary Grant, Marlon Brando, and in the case of my jacket choice, Roger Moore.
Out of the Box
The goat suede on Roger model I selected is absolutely fantastic. The mid-weight drapes beautifully; the hand of the suede is soft and luxurious, but also feels sturdy enough to last a lifetime. The jacket has a midsized collar, which suits its timeless design. Detail wise I couldn’t find any glaring flaws or quality control issues. The stitching is straight and well done throughout, and the shanked matte horn buttons I selected complimented the suede color beautifully. I think after inspecting the piece in detail, the only thing I found was one long thread that required a trim.
The ordering process was very straightforward. I mainly spoke with @atacamastyle on Instagram via direct message. After that, they sent me the variety of leather color choices and walked me through the options of nubuck and goat suede, as well as the various button and lining selections. They also emailed me a size chart to help me decide what would work best for my desired fit. I chose the dark brown goat suede, a green paisley lining, and brown horn buttons. Once my selections were finalized, the jacket was created with my specifications and on my doorstep in approximately two weeks. Truly an impressive turnaround time for a custom garment.
I found that based on the size chart that a medium was probably going to be on the snug side. While this would have worked great for a summer jacket to wear over tees, I decided to size up to a large to allow plenty of room for layering. For reference, I’m a 40” chest and normally wear size 40 jackets. I’m quite pleased with the end result, as this is a jacket I can now pair with many relaxed, layered or casual outfits. Atacama was very helpful in suggesting the correct size for my intended use of this jacket. One thing I also appreciated about the sizing was the length. I prefer things on the slightly longer side and this jacket did not disappoint; the length felt perfectly balanced with the body sizing on me.
